Hi penguin family. I’m sure you’ve heard the news by now. On Thursday, Disney announced that Club Penguin Island will be sun-setting at the end of this year. None of us could’ve ever expected this to happen, especially after months of incredible updates, parties and memories made together. The reasons for this closure are complicated, and I’ll touch on some of them in this article – but I wanted to write a little bit about my Club Penguin journey, what’s happening with the game right now and everything I want to do for the community to make these last few months our greatest. ūüźß‚̧ԳŹ

A little reflection on the last 10 years

December 19th 2008. The day I finally became a penguin. After hearing about the game so much from message boards on a different virtual world, I decided to give this snowy world of penguins a try. I joined at one of the most magical times of the year – the Holiday Party of 2008. Coins for Change was in full swing and free items for everyone were in boxes all over the Island. In fact, the Golden Bell, Santa Hat and Santa Beard were some of my very first items on the classic game.

I wish I played a bit more back in 2008-2010, but I was still waddling around occasionally – as I realised the game I originally found out about Club Penguin from wasn’t run by good people. Their game became more and more restrictive to members¬†(the total opposite to CPI!), so I played Club Penguin more instead. Some memorable parties from back then are the April Fools Party 2009, along with The Fair and Puffle Parties.

By August 2010, I got a membership for the Mountain Expedition¬†– after falsely believing that my penguin needed special gear to climb the Toughest Mountain. Whoops. I had over 10,000 coins saved up from my non-member days, and I splashed it all on… PUFFLE FURNITURE.¬†(It’s the best furniture though).¬†I soon discovered how awesome Club Penguin really was, with something new happening all the time and the¬†best community ever where we all belong.

To be continued in a 10th Anniversary special…

What’s happening with Club Penguin Island?

It’s absolutely heartbreaking to even write about this… According to a news article, the Club Penguin Island team in Kelowna were informed that they were laid off last Tuesday. What does this mean? It means that a Disney executive decided that the team would lose their jobs. As a consequence of this, the game will be closed down at the end of the year. Right now, not much information has been shared on Island News about the future of the game. We have been promised more information in the coming weeks.

The Club Penguin Island team truly do care about the community, and I know they will want to give the game the best possible farewell. Before this announcement, the team will have been working on the Halloween Party. I believe there is a good chance that we get to see this party release. It is still uncertain whether there will be a Waddle On Party, but anything could happen at this point. That said, the community are planning some¬†incredible events for everyone to make the most of this amazing game before the end. I can’t wait!

The official Island News blog is where information and statements regarding the game closure will be posted by Disney.

The Islanders before the sun sets…

I am making you a promise, right here right now. I promise I will do all I can to give us all the best possible memories on Club Penguin Island before the very end. Meetups, quizzes, stories, everything I can. I love this game so much, and we don’t have long left – so let’s make the most of it. Here’s a taster of what you can expect:

  • CPI Trivia quizzes
  • The Islanders¬†Live¬†igloo stage show
  • Trick-or-Treat hide-and-seek
  • Fancy Garden¬†Party¬†igloo
  • Ultimate Gamer¬†Tournament¬†meetup
  • Halloween Costume Contest
  • The Adventurers meetups

Are you excited? I know I am! I hope you will be able to join me for these fun events in-game and right here on The Islanders. If you’re hosting your own meetups or have ideas for what you’d like me to host on the Island, share them with the Island community in the comments below!

Right from the very start, I wanted The Islanders to be a place for everyone in the Club Penguin Island community to read, enjoy and be part of. This is a blog for you – the community – and it always has been. I am heartbroken that Club Penguin Island’s story is coming to an end so soon… but that doesn’t mean our community ends here. Club Penguin has touched all of our lives in so many different ways, and this is only the beginning of your story.

Whether this game has inspired you to write, code, draw, edit videos, become a better person or absolutely anything else – YOU are Club Penguin’s legacy and you will all go on to achieve great things in your lives. I am certain of it. For now, let’s enjoy the time we have together. Stay tuned for when our next penguin party will be happening very soon!

Once again, thank you for everything. Until next time, penguin family!

Waddle on!
